Whenever our tank is done cycling... my BF REALLY wants to get either tiger barbs (albino or those green ones) for the tank. I'm worried though b/c I read that they are nippers and really don't want them picking on my long-finned danios.
So when we do eventually get some... how many should we get to help keep them from bullying the other fish.. if that's even possible?

I keep my tiger barbs with my zebra danios and have never had a problem. As long as the barbs are in a school they focus their agression on eachother.

I agree, I started out with 6 tiger barbs and all was fine they just chased each other. now i have 4 green and 4 albino total of 14 tigers they are very cool to watch. I would recommend no less than 6.

i have 5 and they only chase eachother iv heard to keep them in odd numbers so one of them can rest while the others chase

I kept Tigers and Leopard Danios together for quite a while. They are both kind of ornery fish, and both would rather pick on their own kind.

I have seen the green tiger barbs too but not sure if they go by another name or not. Ive had quite a few tiger barbs from time to time and lost them for one reason or another. My last batch of tiger barbs are very aggressive, tho only to each other. Ive had one that I named lil B******, and the name is appropiate for him. He is absolutly insane and has attacked all the other barbs. He has a crazy look and is always on the search to do damage. I moved him in with the male betta to get him out of the community tank and was fine for days there, til he decided to start doing some fin nipping. So I took him out of there and put him in with the Discus and Angel fish, they are so much bigger than he is and now he thinks hes a Discus and likes to hang out with them. He hasnt been aggressive to them there. Now I had another tiger barb that really attacked another tiger and hurt him bad. Ive had the remainning tiger barbs hiding out at the top of the tank or under plants to get away from him. I also moved him and he is now in the divided tank with another betta. I just dont know what to do with these bad guys at this point. I think that this last batch of tiger barbs were much more aggressive than past batches an so I believe I must have got a lot of males and probably only one or two females for them to act this way. I will not be getting anymore tiger barbs even tho they are really beautiful fish.

the green ones and the regular ones are the same fish same species just different variations of the color

If i got 4 of them would that be OK or would it be bad mistake

I would think your tank is stocked so adding fish would overstock it.

Here's what you do...

1. Get rid of the TV.
2. Get yourself a nice long tank, like a 50 long (48x12x20).
3. Position the tank in the space formerly occupied by the TV.
4. Once the tank is planted and cycled, get yourself about 25 tiger barbs (I personally would do a school of regular, green, and albinos for a nice contrast).
5. Watch the show.

You'll never miss the TV, because the tiger barbs will provide all the entertainment you'll ever need. If I could talk my wife into it, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

In response to your actual question, I think you'd be fine adding 6 tigers to your tank. They're a really fun fish to keep.

EDIT: You'll need to find a new home for your female Betta.

Hi I'm new to the site as well as to tiger barbs. I have 3 green tigers with a red tail shark in a 30g. In my 20g, I have guppies and a common pleco. Will I be able to put them in the tank with the tigers? They have hiding places in the tank as well as plants. From what I've read, I'll need to buy more tigers as well.

common pleco gets a bit big for either of those tanks at around 12 inches, dont know about the guppies, my tigers pick only on each other

Tigers are best in a group of 6 or more. I would be hesitiant about putting them with guppies, they may nip the tails (esp. if less than 6).

Agree with wkiinne02 (? think i got that spelt wrong). If you have a big tank and heaps of tigers you don't need a TV. They are so much fun to watch!!

BUT you are asking for trouble putting them in a small goup (less than 6) in a community tank.

I have 11 in my 250L tank, with pearl danios, cherry barbs, bristlenosed, rainbow shark and dwarf gouramis.... The tigers play with eachother, don't tend to chase the other species - rainbow shark is painful, chases everyone at meal times for about 45 minutes.... Wouldn't trade the tigers for the world!!

BACK TO THE FIRST QUESTION:
As much as I think they are an awesome fish I wouldn't put them with the long-finned danios (unless I had a backup plan), they are notorious for fin nipping, seems a bit risky.
