feeding

hi all,

we have 12 tiger barbs. we feed them once a day, alternating between flakes and frozen bloodworm cubes. every single time we feed them, they go ballistic as if they have been starved. we used to thaw the bloodworms to feed them but one day decided to just drop it in frozen and it was intense! they tore that thing up within seconds!!! it was quite like seeing those youtube vids of piranhas feeding. are we not feeding them enough? everytime anyone walks by the tank, they seem to be begging for food.

A fish's stomach is as big as its eye, so I think you're doing fine. They always behave that way when eating, and overfeeding won't do anyone any favors (you probably know that). Maybe feed once in the morning and once at night, just to calm them down, but keep the amounts the same.

I agree with Je55. I suggest feeding them twice per day, every 12 hours works for me and mine. I don't feed them as much for the second feeding.

Sounds like your fish are doing a good job training you I keep 10 and they will stuff themselves to the point they have trouble swimming right. That only happens once I feed mine once a day, with the occasional treats when I am showing them off.

I don't have a set schedule on my bard tank. They do usualy get fed at least once a day. Sometimes 3 or 4 times. It's good to go at least 1 day a week without feeding no matter what kind of fish you keep. They will clean up the tank, and waste much less after they adjust to not getting fed on occasion. The reason I am currently feeding so well is only because I am gonna try to spawn my barbs. The ones I already had are in a 35 gal that has the temp set at 80. I have 3 new females that I purchased yesterday in a 2.6 quarentine tank. In a week or so when I am satisfied that the new females are healthy enough to spawn they will go into the main tank. I hope for a large spawn.
