a new barb

i was just given a single 3 and a bit inch greed tiger barb. i know the should be in groups of 6 or more. there are no long fin fish ATM (my angel is separated) so i thought it should be fine. i have never had tiger barbs before so i don't know them for who they are. i might buy 5 more tomorrow. (my tank will then be overstocked, i know, i am moving a few fish soon). my question is, will this keep fin nipping at a minimum?

thanks

It's possible, but in my experience you can never count on tiger barbs to not nip. I've always kept them in semi-aggressive tanks as dithers for cichlids- I wouldn't personally keep them in a community tank, although I know some people do.

I have a group of 8 odessa barbs in my 72G community and they dont bother my angels or my gouramis, but my angels seem to have learnt that as soon as a barb goes near them to flare there fins out and scare them away
Hope this helps

Hello BadWolf. It seems you are bringing home a lot of "stray" fish lately. I think your latest purchase was the large black angel that you paid $20, was sold to you when it was ill and it passed away. Too, you move your fish around so much I'm starting to get dizzy myself. I'm not trying to be mean or cruel in any way because I think your heart is in the right place. I would love to read in one of your posts that your tanks are stocked, that you're keeping up with your water changes (if I remember correctly you have water restrictions in your area), and that your fish are doing well. I feel like you are just trying to do too much! Relax lol enjoy the fish that you have. Every time you add fish or move them around you're inviting disease into your tanks. As much as we both love this hobby there has to be a stopping point.
Please take this in the good intentions of which I'm stating it.

your right, it's just so hard to say no to an offer, i am fish obsessed, i spent a little more than $400 last year on live fish alone (not all those fish i bought for myself), i just like buying fish. but i have stopped myself from buying or taking more in.

thanks

You're a fine young man I'm sure...I just want you to be able to relax and enjoy your fish and tanks. Take care and have a nice weekend.
