Ick prevention

As to a follow up on my recent ICH attach thread.
ick atack help!!!

All I know is I need to keep my nitrate/nitrate levels in check to prevent stressing the fish which I guess makes them vulnerable to diseases like ick.
So far my nitite levels are good.
I also use a back hanging filter and have 3 air stones, I keep my temperature around 80.

I want to add more fish someday so I really need help and advice how to prevent this ich from striking again.

Thanks.

Hello. This is a preventative that I use religiously. Stable temperatures are crucial. Quarantine for new additions is highly recommended.

im sorry your fish are getting sick and passing ....its so frustrating when we try our best and things go wrong..heres some suggestions I can give

1. get your own test kit if you dont have one..that way you will ALWAYS know whats going on in your tank and you dont ever have to rely on others to tell you things are ok or not...LFS are not always trustworthy...an API liquid master test kit has everything you need and you can do hundreds of tests...its a must have IMO

2. once you have the kit, you will probably see that your cycle isnt completed because MOST meds kill the beneficial bacteria needed to keep the cycle going..so depending on your test results, will depend on your next move...

3. daily partial water changes with either prime or amquel + is whats needed to keep the fish safe and unstressed from a mini cycle

4. turning up the temp to 83-84F for two weeks, with extra airation as warmer water has less oxygen, and extra gravel vacs to get up the ich spores, usually will cure them...in etreme cases , meds will be needed....

5. ich is like the common cold to humans...the virus is always present around them but unless stressed or their immune system is down, they rarely show signs and dont get sick...so having a varied diet, cycled tank, and not over crowding, usually keeps ich away....

so getting your test kit and some prime or amquel + , would be what id suggest you do as soon as you can.....there is hope so dont give up!!!!!

How do you quarantine the new additions? Do you keep them in their own bowls and observe them for a few days before you add them to your main tank?

Maybe some other members will see this and tell you how they set up theirs. Go to the Fish Forum Home at the top left hand side of this screen. Click. Find the DIY section for Quarantine set ups.
Personally I have a second aquarium set up just for this purpose. Good luck!

Thanks about water changes, how often do you water change to prevent diseases?

I am getting mixed information on this. Some say every month, some fish owners tell me they dont need a water change they just add water if needed.
Whats confusing is both people who tell me to water change or not to water change have healthy fish. Do certain fishes need the water change, some dont? Or is it the size of the tank? A friend of mine has a 50 gal tank with guppies and he doesnt do any water changes.
