I just recently added tiger barbs to my tank and I notice some odd behaviors amongst them. I don't see them chasing eachother around at all, they often school together and seem happy. However, every so often, 2 of them will get into a "pushing match" for lack of a better way to put it, where they will push their noses up against eachother. There is no fin nipping, just some of this behavior that almost looks like they are kissing. Is this normal? Is this something I should be concerned about? Can they harm eachother like this?

any help would be appreciated.

this sounds pretty normal, tiger barbs are schooling fish in a sense, but they have to establish a hierarchy. within the first week or two you will see them fighting amongst each other, testing each others strength, etc. after a little while they will eventually settle into the hierarchy and they should be fine. however, if you ever change around the decorations or move them into a different tank or whatever the case may be, then you'll probably see them re-establishing the hierarchy.

i wouldn't be worried about it unless it lasts longer than a couple weeks.

ive also heard that from time to time they will challenge the top fish once in awhile, trying to gain leadership
