Tigers & Guppies :(

Hi,

My dad has unknowingly this weekend put 8 tiger barbs in his tank which already contained 3 Platy's and 3 Guppies.

The Tigers have ripped one of the Guppies tail to shreds, its awful! They stick together all the time but they must be doing it when we're not looking.

I've only just got in from work I'm not sure if pets at home will sell a quaranteen cage type thing to keep them seperate. Is there anything else we can do

Tiger Barbs are notorious for being fin nippers and aggressive. Ive had my share of them in the past and have experienced their moods. Is there anyway you can get a small tank for your 3 guppies? I dont know what size tank you have but sometimes, if its big enough you can buy a tank divider and separate them?

He has a big 90 litre tank - do stores sell dividers then or do you make them yourself? I think he'll have to go up to pets at home when he gets in and buy a divider. I had no idea they were that bad! They look so angelic! Horrors!!!

90L is roughly a 23 US size tank. Im not sure if its a good idea to have 8 tiger barbs, the 3 platy and the 3 guppies all in that tank. It seems to be pretty stocked if not overstocked a bit. So dividing the tank will make for much smaller swimming areas and that may not be a good idea.
Only other suggestion would be to either return the guppies or hopefully be able to buy another small tank for them.

Oh right! So they're not really strong then just those sort of soft things? We don't have Walmart's here... I wonder if tesco will sell them....

How do you stick them on?!

Overstocked The tank is huge!

He can't return the guppies, he loves them & he's had them a while now - the tiger barbs he only got this weekend. I've tried calling the garden centre & they're closed.

We can't leave them like this overnight again it'll be carnage.

So what do we do overnight until the garden centre is open?? He'll have to go up to pets and buy a whole new tank.

Do you think the garden centre will take the tigers back??

are you sure its 90L? if you say the tank is huge, maybe you have the wrong size? because 23 gals isnt that big...and they should take them back as they usually have a 7day return policy..but all stores are different

Its big to me!! haha. No its def 90litres.

He's on his way home from work & is going to pets at home to buy another tank for the guppies while we hope the garden centre will take the monsters back!

Questions are - what is the minimum size tank for the guppies in the mean time? 3 of them.

And also - Will the guppies be ok if we move them temporarily then move them back?! I mean we have some tetra safestart we'll have to use that to jump start the tank at short notice?

8 tigers, 3 platys and 3 guppies is overstocked im afraid. Tesco dont sell anything like tank dividers, they have nothing to do with pets other than dog food i think. I would return the tigers or return the guppies

We will return them tomorrow hopefully but the problem is it is nightime over here so we have to do something with them tonight or they'll kill the guppy.

Could they survive in a 20litre tank for a few days?

That is a five gal us. If you were only going to keep the guppies in there for a short while IMO that would be fine. What else is the alternative and you dont want to chance seeing them get hurt anymore than they already are.

Good luck in returning the tiger barbs.

He's on a mission to buy another tank but obv it will need to be smallish or my mum will have a hairy fit!! haha. It will hopefully only be until I finish work tomorrow and can take the beasts back. Then the guppies can go back in with their lovely peaceful Platy friends.

What a nightmare!!! I'm so glad I only have one fish who lives alone!

In fact - I kno its not ideal - but could we put the tiger barbs in the new tank overnight? So the poor guppies can stay where they are? Or is that out of the question.... ?

I just this second realised that!!

Think I'll tell him to move the tigers. Why should the Guppies move out of their home...

A 40 litre tank! Equipped with a bubble system. Spoilt evil things!! haha

Not ideal, cos obv we're doing it in a rush but we're treating the water & we had a spare heater so we'll just have to make do.. I think the tigers may be staying! Not ure if my mum is aware of that yet

More fun but they're so mean! I feel terrible it was me who kept going on about them cos I think they look really funky - but the guy in the shop did warn my dad about the Guppies & he wrongly thought they'd be ok as he'd bought so many tigers. We actually only have 7 tigers as we lost one the day after we bought them, he had no tail! He'd obv been munched in the shop.

Anyway, we ended up getting the tigers out it was not easy! They are happy in the new tank & enjoying themselves. And everyone else is breathing a sgh on relief in the old tank altho the injutred Guppy is looking tired this morning apparently & sticking to the bottom. Such a shame, he was the leader of the Guppies, now he's struggling

My mum didn't want the first fish tank, now she has 2! Oops!

I'm so glad I only have one betta & I never have to worry about anyone munching on him while i'm asleep!! Thx for the help guys xx
