Murder in the Fishtank

I have a Tiger Barb. At night, he bites the tails of my Black Skirt Tetras! He has already killed one. There are other long finned fish, but he only targets the Black Skirts. What should I do, and if I have to return him, does Petcetera have a return policy?

Tiger barbs are on my list of "Americans most wanted" Not because I want one either! I had 2 tiger barbs that gave my Betta boy a crew cut to his long flowy fins when they shared his tank....They are no longer with me and I have since learned not to keep anything with a Betta fish....(especially tiger barbs)!!!!!!!!

Sorry you lost your fishies.....I would take him back before he does any further damage..

Hello and welcome to fishlore!
Most chain store's have a return policy on their fish. What I would do is just bring them in and tell them what happened. If anything, at least you will be able to get rid of them. I also had tiger barbs and I can say they are very aggressive little fish, and I had mine in a group as well, and it didnt matter. They would just attack each other and I had one kill two of the other tiger barbs.
I agree with Martinismommy... they are on my list of 'least favorite' fish.. but I understand the draw to them, as they are very kewl looking fish!
Also, the black skirt tetras are very aggressive as well, so it may have been a mutual aggression going on in your tank!
Good luck with them... I hope you are able to bring the tigers back..

EDIT: I just looked at your aquarium info... and you are WAY overstocked! That may be a big reason for your tank aggression going on...

Tiger Barbs really need to be in groups of 6 or more to be content and behave like one would expect. I also agree that you've got too many fish. The Barbs need a larger group to feel secure and have an alpha fish. If they are insecure, they would likely lash out at just about anything.

The Barbs are known to be fin nippers so a Betta would be in serious danger. Betta are 1) often very passive with other fish (except other Betta) and, 2) they are slow moving fish and these points make them even more susceptible to successful attack.
