Getting back into it

I am going to set up a 20 gallon freshwater tank. I really like tiger barbs and red tail sharks. How would this work if I got 6 or 7 tiger barbs and a red tail? From what I read so far, the barbs tend to do well in schools. This keeps the aggression down. And the red tail seems to do better with other fish about the same size and aggression level.
How do you think that would work?

The general rule of thumb is 1 gallon of water per 1 inch of adult-sized fish. Tiger barbs can grow to be 3 inches, so just having 6 of those would put you at 18. Red tail sharks can grow to be 6 inches, so your tank would be overstocked. I think a tank with just tiger barbs would be nice though.

Well, I am really more interested in keeping a Red Tail. I guess I'll look around to see who has had some luck with other compatible tank mates.

It sounds like your best bet would be to get a red tail and try to find a fish that tops out at about 6" and can be kept in a pair.

Welcome to the forums, by the way.
