Has anybody had any experience with mixing the various color variations of the tiger barb... my lfs carries the regular gold one and the green ones. Would 4 and 4 be ok or do they need to have their independent populations > 6 or so? Thanks!

There should be no problems mixing the different color types.

in my 20gal i have 6, one is a green tiger barb of about the same size and they shoal together. my friend at the lfs told me that they should all be okay as long as they're about the same size and you don't have too many males.

Hi,
We started with regular tiger barbs 4, and recently added green 3, and albino 4. They are schooling together no problems. Sometimes by size and sometimes by color it varies. Been together about 4 days. No problems. They still chase each other in all varieties...but never actually hurt one another so far.

They will work fine together.

I have 12 Tiger Barbs, 1 Green Barb, 1 Albino Barb and (4) Cherry Barbs in my 39 gallon tank. I had 2 each green and albino, but recently one each passed away. I'm looking at adding a couple Odessa Barb and/or Tinfoil Barbs.

I really like the Barb family as they are ALWAYS active. The only time they sleep is at night and then when the light goes off, it takes them a while to settle down.

In my same tank I have a Black-Banded Leporinus and he seems to mediate when the Tiger Barbs starts fighting one another. He will swim toward them and break them up. He's also a head stander and find him standing vertical in the water. He likes to move rocks around too at the bottom, guess he doesn't like my decorating.

I have five Tiger Barbs of four different color variations in my tank. It takes the others a little time to except a new tiger of any color in their shoal when I add it but in the end they always accept the new fish. As to size, all of my tigers vary in size and they seem to work out a pecking order amongst themselves. Believe it or not the top dog in my tank is my smallest tiger, the Albino. He is the smallest and by far the one that sticks out the most. So he acts like he has more to prove. So cute!

By all means mix and match your Tigers, it makes for a colorful tank and more peaceful if you have enough of them to keep each other in check.

I've got 4 regular, 3 green, 4 albino (which were called gold at LFS)...
All the larger ones shoal together... 2 albino and one green are new(ish) and v.small compared to the others - they keep to themselves most of the time but do shoal with the others more and more as they grow...
