X-Mas Tetras

I was at the pet store yesterday and I saw some tetras called X-mas Tetras. They were a pale yellow with either neon green or neon red spots all along the dorsal fin(on the body) area. They were really neat looking. Are these real tetras or just a hoax?

Re: X-Mas Tetras

I'v heard that there are two ways in "coloring" fish, injecting them with dye or putting them in water that takes off their slime coat, painting colors on them, then puting them a the water again to put back on their slime coat and there good to sell, if you feed them color enhancing food and take good care of them they will retain their color but if you don't it fades away. I would be interested to see if anybody else has heard of this method. Have you? Just out of curiousity where they selling them at higher then normal prices?

Re: X-Mas Tetras

No, I haven't heard of that method. They were selling them at about $1.99 like the rest of their tetras and other small fish.

Re: X-Mas Tetras

They are dyed fish and they are injected with needles. Thats how they get the colored spots on the. This is cruel and inhumane treatment of fish.

Re: X-Mas Tetras

That's horrible. It's a good thing I didn't get them then. I honestly think that they were white Skirt Tetras to begin with.

Re: X-Mas Tetras

Good for you for not buying them!!! Check out the www.deathbydyeing.org website and you can see some of the fish that are dyed and learn how they do it.

Holy Crap. That is so horrible what they do to the fish just to bring in more money. Now I'm glad I didn't buy some!

Re: X-Mas Tetras

Yes ATM I have. What they do is dip them in acid to remove their slime coat then dip them in dye.

Re: X-Mas Tetras

It's still harming them right, because a guy was using that and saying it didn't harm them to justify selling of dyed fish at a good lfs but I didn't want to argue with him without facts.

Re: X-Mas Tetras

Yes if you are not sure DO NOT buy any fish that might be dyed. It is a horrible, cruel thing those selfish people do to those fish...I'm not sure which mehtod is worse, dunking them in acid or stabbing them with a giant needle.
