Tetra and Gourami Q's

Hello,

I have been using this site a lot since I set up my tanks, and it's been really helpful! Thanks to everyone for that!
Anywho, I have 2 questions. The first is this; I just set up a 20 gallon tank with 3 black neon tetra as cycling fish. Once it's done cycling, I have another tetra in my 10 gallon tank (he's the only tetra in there) that I wouldn't mind adding, since tetra are schooling fish. Do all tetra get along and school? Or is it better to keep them amongst themselves?
My second question.... Once the 20 gallon tank is done cycling, I want to add a larger fish (6 inch as adult). I'm thinking of a Blue Gourami. Would they all get along ok? I read that the BG is somewhat aggressive to smaller fish, but I've also read a lot of posts of people saying that their BG's are really calm.
Thanks again everyone for your help, I look forward to contribute my two cents someday! And, just because I see it there......Star Wars for the win!!

HI and welcome to the board!

I guess you didn't read about fishless cycling and why it's preferable...? Tetras are rather sensitive and hopefully yours will be able to withstand being exposed to toxins like nitrites and ammonia, but no guarantee.

Anyway, most tetras are fine together but I would add a few more of whatever kind you have in your 10 gal, plus a couple more black neons, since all tetras do like to be with a school of their own kind.

A blue gourami should be no problem in the tank and shouldn't harm your tetras. They grow to about 4" inches or so, and that's plenty big enough for a 20 gal tank. They very much appreciate lots of plants.

I have a honey dwarf gourami who lives with two schools of tetras (one cardinal school and one blood fin school)

He was very jumpy when the blood fins were first added because of the speed they tend to swim at (very active fishes) but that only lasted a day or two. now he is back to his normal, constantly begging for food self.

Gouramis can be very different in personality though i think. so what works in some cases might not work in all cases. but given a nice cave or lots of plants to hide in, it should be fine id reckon. but i would consider at least 6 of the same type of tetra to avoid the tetras getting a bit nippy.

about the cycle, tetras arnt always the best choice if you decide to go with a fish-having (the opposite of fishless?) cycle. they tend to be more sensitive towards the spikes than something like a zebra i think. not to say they wont all thrive that is, they are just sensitive.

you might want to consider picking up something along the lines of tetra safe start since the fish have already been added. I wouldnt use anything other than the safestart though, they tend to do more harm than good.

I brought 12 neon tetra to go with my 2 Blue Gourami. I regret getting them because within a couple of hours my Blue Gourami kill all the tetra
