Emperor Tetras

Does anyone have experience with emperors? I'm wanting a school for my 55 gal that swims in the middle/upper regions, but I wanted to make sure they're not too skittish. I technically have a peaceful community tank, but my male gourami and ram can be a bit territorial and I know some fish will stop eating if they're chased a little bit (I'm specifically thinking about the pearl gourami in this situation). I've updated my livestock list in aquarium info, and other than that I'm planning on adding 2 more female gouramis plus this school unless you all see a problem. Also, will they hold their own when it comes to feeding time? I know I have a bunch of piggy fish so I want to make sure everyone is going to eat.

I had Purple Emperor Tetras in my 20 gal years ago. I loved them. They were beautiful. I think they will be fine with your Ram and Gourami, especially considering the size of the tank. I didn't see any problems during feeding time. They all got along and got their fair share just fine.
In fact, when I set up my 75 Tropical tank, I plan to get them again.

I plan on getting some for one of my planted tanks. The seem really sociable at our locl fish room. The whole tank of them came right up to me...most tetra ignore you unless you have a food container in your hand lol.
I really want some too.

I love my emperor tetras. They are very active and get along with everyone in my tank. They are not at all skittish. They don't mind me walking right up to the tank and they love getting in front of my camera.

I plan on getting a gourami. Please let me know how your gourami get along with the new emperors.

great fish

I also love my emperor tetras they are great fish to have and have some personality to boot. For the schooling aspect mine have never schooled since I bought them. I have one that is much bigger in size than the other two and his back tail fin has a long black fin sticking out. I assume he is male and the other two smaller ones are female but I could be wrong. They have done the loving dance and they have laid eggs on my plants. My other fish though gobbled them up pretty much right away. Mine are very territorial only with each other though the big guy rules the top of the tank and the other two stay on different sides. The only time I saw them together really is when the male was interested in the female that is it. If the other two think about coming to the surface he lets them have it. I call him my little tough guy because when I clean the tank he is constantly trying to nibble my arm. LOL At any rate mine are not fin nippers they have left my angels alone and all my other fish. They are fine with neon tetras as well the only aggressive behavior they have are with each other. They do fine as well as my neon tetras in very high P.H. water do not let the LFS people tell you otherwise. All my fish in this tank are at least 6 to 7 months old and knock on wood have not lost any yet. I must be doing something right if they are breeding I am no expert on these fish but I will always keep these fish at least in one of my tanks from now on. They are great!!!!!!!!
