Weird tetra behavior

I just bought 4 red-eyed tetras, supposingly 2 male and 2 female. I am planning to add 2 or 4 more as soon as I can.

Three of the tetras swim together, but the fourth one (male) always hangs out my himself. He also didn't feed as much as the others. Any ideas what's wrong with him?

Re: Weird tetra behavior

I am not sure but you might need 6 teteras at least since teteras are schooling fish.

4-5 tetras should be fine...He may just be feeling his way around.....

Thanks so much. Maybe he's just not a team player... Or he ticked somebody off and is in timeout of sorts. I'll keep an eye on him.

Re: Weird tetra behavior

just keep a good eye on him...make sure he's swimming around, not laying on the bottom...he might not have been as well acclimated to the tank, and may be a little shy and trying to get used to things

Re: Weird tetra behavior

Thanks, I'll see what he does tonight. He's as active as the other fish, just on the opposite side of the tank. The three will hide behind a rock, he's up near the surface. the three ure up near the surface, he goes to the same spot behind the rock the others were behind... etc.

Hi Dasha,

It is the same thing with my Zebra Danios too..

I have six and one of them always hangs out alone (behind the rocks/plants) and he comes out only during feeding time.. But he is as active as the others.. Weird behaviour indeed

Don't worry, there is nothing wrong with your little guy, it could just be(if they are really 2 m, 2 f) that the male has gone and won the respect of the ladies and they hang around with him.
