Re: levels for new tank
what testing kit are you using? the test strips are notoriously inaccurate : . if you are using the API master test kit, did you shake the bottle vigorously for at least 30 seconds before you added the drops to the tube? AND did you shake the tube vigorously for a minute after and wait 5 mins for the colour to develop. sorry if this comes across as patronising. its not intended that way!! its just "Terry" did a thread on this (wish i knew where it was and i'd give you the link!) and the nitrate testing solution separates and the solid part sinks to the bottom of the bottle and thus gives false low readings. also.....have you checked the expiry lately? if out of date it will be inaccurate! i didnt even know they had dates on until terry pointed this out! each bottle has its own date. another theory is...do you have alot of plants in there? they can use up nitrate. i'd be surprised if they used it all though! the only other thing i can think of is have you done loads of water changes. maybe you've just thrown them all away?! . sorry i havent any other ideas!!! i'd do a re-test!!!

Re: levels for new tank
i shouldnt worry. my readings have gone a bit wierd before. so long as they're within reasonable limits and the fish are well, thats good! just keep a close eye on them over the next couple of weeks. as you still have some ammonia, that will get pushed into nitrite and into nitrate so should still see some changes. eventually it will settle and you'll reliably get ammonia and nitrite as 0 and nitrate below 20, but detectable (5-10 is good) you can just check once a week. if and when more fish go in the tank, that will cause ammonia to go up (more waste being produced). the bacteria may be sufficient to handle this and you wont see a dif in readings, however, if you do, just keep a close eye on it...again til it gets pushed through to nitrite and nitrate.
you're doing a great job!

Re: levels for new tank
White cloudy is usually good. It is a bloom of the good bacteria you are wanting to develop in your tank. After a few days, the water will clear on its own.

Re: levels for new tank
Wow! Just read through the history of this original post. great job Gilly! I wish I would have been as thorough and astute as you when I first started 2 years ago. Anyway, you guys mentioned ghost shrimp. Are they pretty easy keep and would any other fish bother them in my tank?

Re: levels for new tank
hi simpleton thanks for comments but it came with alot of help from friends on this forum i think if you are not afraid to ask questions then people wont be afraid to answer even if the questions sound dumb, its better to get advice first before making a mistake that could take weeks or even months to sort out. the item about the ghost shrimps is a question i asked about 10 days ago, i think it depends on the other fish that you have in your tank ... if they are aggressive in life then dont but if they get on well like community fish then as long as they can hide when shedding then it should be ok .... by the way i may be getting chameleon shrimps instead but will wait and see when i go to pet shop.... once again thanks for comments and hope this helps you

Re: levels for new tank
Gilly, I looked in two places, and couldn't identify any photos you may have posted. I am not an expert, you may need to pm one of the administrators if you still have problems. The places I looked are up at the top of this page under Tropical Fish Picture Gallery, this is where the tank of the month and fish of the month are voted on, I only looked under March, because I thought you posted them in march. Since the pictures are not identified with a name, I don't know if you are there or not. The other place is under Freshwater Fish Tanks and Photos, and did not see any postings by you. This is where you may be able to get help in how to post, there are threads just about it. Good Luck.
On your shrimp question, I am also looking, and at this point don't know for sure what I want. I have 5 shrimp that at the LFS were just called algae eating shrimp, but I want lots of shrimp, and will probably start with the Cherry Red, since the females show up so well, but the Crystal Red also really strike me as a good investment, and beautiful. Under the Aquarium of the Month of March there is a photo of a Bamboo shrimp that is really cool. It shows in great detail the "filters" on it's legs that are used to gather particles out of the water!! Let me know if you find any shrimp that you think are exceptional.

Re: levels for new tank
Hi Gilly, don't worry, the white cloudiness is a bacteria bloom, it WILL clear. I have one doing the same thing right now. I have a new 50 gal that I'm cycling.
Even when a tank is old, if you go through a mini cycle because you scrub things, or clean a filter, you may have cloudiness for a couple of days. But as the tank is first developing, it can take a while. Keep the filters going, and provide air with air stones, and keep the temp. up to mid to upper 70's and it should clear in a few more days.
Yesterday I was looking up those chameleon shrimp, are you sure you want a shrimp that might eat your small fish? Looks like these might. The other day I saw a picture of a shrimp eating a tiger barb! Can't remember what kind of shrimp that was, but it sure looked strange. The other thing I think about the chameleon is that you will not really have the pleasure of watching them, since they camouflage themselves so well. I like seeing things in my tank I pay for! That way I can keep track of whether they are doing well, or they have died off! It sounds like this would be hard to do with these shrimp. Hope you are having a great day!
