I am having difficulty in finding out the hardness of the water in my aquarium. My eSHa Aqua Quick Test strips show GH18. When reading up about suitable water hardness for Glowlight Tetras it recommended dh 5-12. I have also read "care is needed with regard to 'degrees of hardness', the definition of which varies from Country to Country and test kit to test kit, depending on origin. Do I need a different test kit that measures in dh or is it the same as GH?

Hi welcome to FishLore!!

I'm sorry I can't really help with your question.
Just wanted to say, I have hard water but no idea what the reading is.
My Glowlights do great.

If you don't mind, I'd like to change the title of your thread to better reflect your question.
It should get more attention that way.

I have glowlights and my GH is 150ppm.

DH/ PPM / Water Hardness
0-3 / 0-54 /soft
3-6 / 54-108 /slightly soft
6-12 / 108-216 /slightly hard
12-18 / 216-324 /moderately hard
18-30 / 324-540 /hard

When I shopping around for inhabitants for my tank, I took a test strip to the LPS to see what kind of water conditions they were in there and both places I went to, the strip read over 300 ppm. Yes, I know the strips aren't as accurate, but I didn't have a liquid test kit and would've felt kinda goofy taking and using one, whereas the strips are quick to dip into their tanks and read.

I used this site for the reference:

Unfortuneatly many LFS' don't really care about pH and hardness of the water. If there is a large difference between your setup and their holding tanks, you will need to slowly acclimate the fish.
Because of the LFS not caring so much, often new fish are already stressed....but if you take the time to acclimate, they will get thru it!
