seachem amonia alert - opinions?

i am neurotic by nature and had a tendency to test the water A LOT even though there really was no need. i saw this product and jumped on it.

http://www.seachem.com/Products/prod...oniaAlert.html

all i have to do is look up and i can see the ammonia levels. i still test with my real kit but dont feel the need to compulsively test the water quality. LOL

it was 15$ and lasts a year.

anyways, just wondered if anyone had any opinions on the product

some members have used it and had great results..and some have used it and relied totally on it and never tested and it failed them..i say its great as long as its not the total reliability of testing and not testing and if it makes you relax some, thats a bonus!

I agree with Shawnie when it comes to not using it as your ONLY source. I have them in both my tanks and they make me feel more at ease as well. I test pH every 5 days...I test ammonia, nitrites, nitrates once a month. (my tank is 8 years old, and I haven't added fish in 5 years). Should you add more stock or make significant changes in your tank then I would test more. (or if it's a new tank I would test more also)
Too, on the ALERTS that I have it says they are good for 1 year. I feel more comfortable changing them every 6 months. I tested one a long time ago by holding the ALERT over an ammonia bottle and it actually worked and changed colors. I like them.

I remember reading that fairly recently. There are so many factors that go into play when it comes to measuring ammonia. That's why I like to have the ALERTS and liquid tests as a back up. I think many will agree with the fact the older and more established your tank or tanks become, the more you can relax a bit and enjoy. (and I don't mean relaxing on the water changes )
