False high NitrAtes?

Ok so after reading the sticky and banging #2 bottle to death I retested my nitrates. And got a 10 reading accordidng to the color chart. After getting excited for about 2 seconds i remembered that I didnt invert the test tube after putting in the #1 bottle per the instructions. So I retested immediatly. waited 5 mins and ZERO nitrates. Has anybody ran across this little problem? I think my cycle is almost complete cause for the last 3 days ive been sitting at

0 amm
5.0 NitrItes
? NitrAtes

Yes, you have to follow all of instructions on those bottles. I was getting false 0 readings on the nitrates until (I think it was Lucy) said you really have to whack the second bottle around and bang it on the counter for the thirty seconds. Once I was doing all of that, I started getting accurate results.

Hope that helps.

have you continued to add more ammonia/fish food/etc? at this point your nitrItes are high enough that i would do a very small partial water change, maybe 10% or 15%, that has helped quite a few people plow through the nitrite phase of the cycle. i'd re-test tomorrow if you do the PWC today and see where your levels are at.

API nitrate test kit:
Bottle#1 is primarily HCL (Hydrochloric Acid and other proprietary ingrediants)
Bottle#2 is polyethylene glycol polyethylene glycol - this a reagent water soluble dye
The HCL exchanges nitrate ions for chloride ions. Bottle#2 reagent then reacts with chloride ions and provides a color for results.
This what i remember from chemistry (adding H/CL and NO3 together/ CL HNO3) and reading the MSDS of API Nitrate Test. So if you don't agitate the tube on step 1, it can/will affect the final result.

You must be right because ive tried both ways a few more times today and every time I i got the same result. No shake after bottle #1 10 on the color chart. Shake, zero.

Not to get any more confusing - i would think that shaking would actually provide more diffusement(even a word?) of HCL resulting in a larger scale reaction thus more color gradient, versus no shaking which would provide less color/gradient when bottle 2 added. Ahhhhhhhhhhh what do i know - i actually read articles again on the reagents in the bottles and ion replacement now my head is spinning - that is why we are supposed to follow instructions and not question the ingreidiants mfgr's use?
