ammonia should be zero. Any ammonia cannot be tolorated by fish.

grab some of the filter media out and put it in the filter of the 10 gal....water wont help cycle a new tank ....get some prime water conditioner and put in a few drops

just cut off a piece of the established tank filter sponge part..and put it in with the same 10 gal filter ...you dont need the bag..and not a new piece but a piece from the 30 gal filter...how long has the 30 gal been running?

a piece of the black plastic like sponge? or the filter cartriges? the 30 has been running since dec 27, i put start right in it that day and had fish in it. it came with 9 cichlids and a pleco and i had no choice but to start it right away, i then took the cichlids to the pet store a week later after finding out they got big and are agressive and got the female sword tail and a pair of orange platty's outta the deal. right now the 30 has a peppered cory, pleco, pair of platty's pair of molly's half black very pregnate guppy a male dolmation molly and 2 fedder gold fish that will go to a pond in spring, i had a black lyretail molly but she had babies with in 3 hours of buying her then she died 3 days later. the fry were born on the 11th, and they are all doing good, i just moved them to the 10 gallon cause i hated keeping them in the little plastic breeder so that they wouldnt get eaten

ive never heard of start right but I hope its not like cycle where you have to add forever...safestart is the only instant cycle bacteria I know of that works ...others may have tried things but im not sure...you have to make sure the new tank is cycled and I dont think even if start right was added, that it could be done within hours..I could be wrong tho..so yes cut a piece of the filter cartridge not the plastic piece..the foam piece...and put it in ....id almost put the babies back in a breeder box hanging in the 30 gal to be sure the new tank can be cycled that fast...

well i transfered some of the decor out of the 30 gallon and all the water in the 10 is out of the 30. the readings above are whats in the 10 right now, as for foam, all i have in my filter it a blue and white tetra filter bag thingy and black plastic like sponge, i dont have a sponge filter so im kinda confused on that part

the one that has a feeling of felt/foam not plastic is the one you want to cut a piece from..the deco and the gravel will work also..the water will do nothing as most bacteria isnt free floating but you are on the right track!

well, i'm not using gravel in it cause it will be my fry tank, i do have some java moss that i will transfer some of that also cause im sure theres bacteria in that. thanks for all the advise so far!

your welcome..and I agree a bare bottom tank for fry is best...that way water can be kept clean..you can hang the gravel inside the tank with a net or nylon stocking that has no laundry detergents on them...getting that tank cycled is the most important for those fry
