Hi everybody, I just subscribed to this forum and it seemed like a great idea since I have a burning question in regards to my 38 gallon tropical community tank. When I first got my tank I purchased a Freshwater Master test kit by API. For months now though I am unable to adequately test the water because I lost the instruction booklet that came with the kit. The various bottles do indicate how many drops of each solution to use but I distinctly remember the instructions mentioning stuff like "you put the first solution in the test tube, shake vigourously for X-seconds and then add drops from the second bottle and shake for X-minutes" and so forth.

So my question is, is anybody able to share with me the instructions for each test in this kit? Your help will be greatly appreciated!

Best,
Rudy

Shoot, this may be in the wrong forum, sorry!

Welcome to the forum!

For ammonia, after you put the drops in, you shake it for 5 seconds and let it sit for 5 minutes.

For nitrite, same thing.

For nitrate, you put the first drops in and shake it, then shake the #2 bottle VERY vigorously for 30 seconds. Really, really shake it, and bang it on a table or something. Then, add the #2 drops and shake the test tube for a minute.

I can't recall off the top of my head how to do the pH tests.

Hi Welcome to Fish Lore
I went ahead and moved your thread.

Sorry, I can't find my instructions, but minnow's sounds about right.

Oh, I've found my booklet. For the pH test, add the drops and invert the tube several times.

For the high range pH test, same thing.

excellent! Lucy, thanks for moving my post. That definitely was not the right forum it was in, was it? Minnow, thanks so much, I will do a complete water testing over the weekend. I really appreciate it! Will not following the instructions such as API put in their test kits mess up your test results?

Happy to help

Yes, I would assume that if you don't follow the directions, the results will not be accurate. Especially for the nitrate test, you really need to beat up your #2 bottle to get a good reading.
