Aquarium Pharmaceuticals (API) has the best master test kit - it should test for ammonia, Nitrites and Nitrates.. and pH - although you shouldn't change your water's Ph - just so you know what it is.

aquarium test kit

The API like said above is great! The quick dip sticks are not accurate at all, I found that one out yesterday w/ proof! I had a quick dip stick left from Jungle, and I bought a API master kit and tested the tank w/ both. The readings w/ the jungle gave me a false 3.0 on nitrites, 10 on nitrates, ph of 7.5, The API gave me a nitrite of 1.0, nitrate of 5, ammonia -0-, ph was 7.9 (its an african cichlid tank)....
I knew the fish were way to healthy for the parameters that the jungle test strips gave this past week, and I am obsessive w/ water changes, and we have been vaccuming the tank also... It eased my minde to see the API results! I don't like the 1.0 nitrite but we can always fix that! (they get another water change tomm, plus I added some water conditioner for that yesterday that was API brand).

Are these API kits sold in many local-type stores, or do you have to order them? And do they expire at a certain point?

I believe Petsmart carries them and there may even still be a coupon on their website
