temp difference?

does tempurature make a difference as to whether your tank is cloudy or clear? i recently unplugged my heater in the tank as it is summer and i don't have a/c, the tank temp dropped to 76 degrees and held there steady, and the water went very cloudy white, so i plugged my heater back in, and the water cleared riht up again, i have my heater set at 78 degrees, i find this very odd as my tank has been cycled for quite some time now

Re: temp difference?

No not that I know of. Did you test your water, could be a bacterial bloom if you've been slacking off on your water changes.

Re: temp difference?

that is kind of unusual.. it does sound like a bacterial bloom and maybe the temp increase helped it go away or it just happened to go away then as the blooms do go away. how often do you do partial water changes and what do you treat the water with? what are your ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels at now?

Re: temp difference?

i do 1-2 water changes/week, A/N/N =0/0/15-20, and I treat my water with a product called ammolock, this tank has been fully cycled since the second week of january, and no new fish have gone in since february, so i dunno, haven't changed any filter media, so its got me scratching my head lol

yea.. i am uncertain as to what happened there myself.. i'd just put it down as a bacterial bloom and it sounds like the tank is healthy and all is well now.

Re: temp difference?

its very odd, because it was within hours of plugging the heater back in that itdissappeared, but water is crystal clear now and all fish are healthy and happy

Re: temp difference?

- Where is your thermometer? if it's on the glass.. it's only giving you one reading. In light of that, the rest of the tank, like the center maybe cooling down more with out the heater at night. Maybe this is beneficial for a bacteria bloom like the others said. I usually associate bacteria like plants, and would imagine they require a seasonal or night and day temperature variance that the heater does not allow. Although i don't know if it could explain the "debloom" happening with in hours of reinserting the heater. Just a thought i guess....

- Good Luck, and post anything you find for future reference
