Tank Size for Tangs

I am really interested in getting a yellow tang. I was at my lfs and saw a few in a relatively small tank (i don't know how big). On DFS, I saw that the minimum recommended tank size was 70 gallons...I have a 55 gallon tank...does anyone think I can do have one along with some yellow tail damsels?? ANy help would be great!

Really depends on who you talk to. I keep one in a 55 gallon and I've had it for several years now. There are folks on other forums nicknamed the "tang police" because they think tangs should only be kept in the largest of aquariums, if at all.

Definitely need to qt them before putting into the main tank, thats for sure. Profile info: Yellow Tang

thanks for the info! it's good to hear someone has had success with a 55 gallon tank. it sounds like its best to keep it with other semi aggressive fish...like the blue damsels...would you agree?

The yellow tang I keep in the 55 gallon is only aggressive when I try to introduce new species to the tank. I have a yellowtail in the 55 too and I'd say that the yellowtail damsel is more aggressive towards the yellow tang which is 10 times it's size. Just being a damselfish. I also have a mated pair of maroon clownfish, bta and some green chromis in there as well and they all get along very well. No fighting at all.

My yellow tang is a model citizen. I can even hand feed him. This is not the case with my blue hippo tang, who is very skittish. LOL
