Salting!

Do Swordtail need salt in their water? Do they eat their young

No I don't think you need salt in there water though a small amount here and there won't hurt them as it will help their slime coat etc. as long as you don't have fish in the water that can't tolerate salt. Also I think they do eat there young.

If you keep the female well fed, there is a less chance of the female eating her young.
