crossbreeding

Is it possible to cross swordtails with mollies? My friend is saying yes, I personally think no, I have had some together in community tanks and never got a cross so I'm telling him no. Which one of us is right? .......thanks for clearing this up in advance....a couple of pints are being bet on it!

What I've heard is that Mollies and guppies can crossbreed, and platies and swordtails can crossbreed. But I've never had any experience with it.

I've heard that too, but can swords physically breed with mollies is what we are debating. I need to know if it is possible!

Swords and mollies are not able to cross breed. Platies and swords are basically the same species, while millies and guppies are close, but they do not get a fertile offspring. The wild fish of both the platy and swordtail were used to get the modern pet swordtail and platy and were crossed many times in the process. Swords and platies do not mate with mollies and guppies.

As has been said, no, they won't.
It is theoretically possible that a forced hybrid could occur with human intervention, as they are fairly close (same family, different genus), but, as with the molly/guppy cross, intergenus hybrids tend to be horribly stunted and are almost always infertile.

He will acheive exactly what he's trying to. Guppies an Mollies will readily interbreed, and the resulting fry are called Muppies. They are usually sterile however.

It isn't that readily. If there are both genders of both species availiable, crossbreeding likely won't happen.
