My breeding swordtails are now agressive

I have a 20g tank with guppies millies, & swordtails....my male neon swordtail had a single female mate for the last couple months & had many fry, but the advice I had gottn from the pet store, I was told that I had to have at least two females to each male, so I had bought another female.....Wile she was in quorentine, the male seemed increadibly interested in his new female. once she was finally in the tank, my male almost killed her. I can't figure out y he would want to kill her if he was so interested in her, I had seperated them but now my fry savers are being used I cant prevent the babies from gettn eatn. & no more swordtail fry......What do I do? Any help at all would be apreciaded!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you

20 gallons for swords is a bit on the small side. I wanted to get swords but will not buy any until I get my 30 up and cycled.

The agression could be a few things. It could be that male sword is just really eager. I know my guppy males chase the females around my tank a lot they are just not really big enough to do much to the larger females. It could also be a territory thing. Some fish can get agressive when in what they consider cramped quarters.

i would remove everyone from the tank, rearrange things, and then add the male and both females back in at the same time. also, i agree with SammyJ, the 20 gal is a bit small for all of the swords

Thank you very Much for all your help
Yes I agree that My tank is too small for my swords....It was a temporary move to the small tank, I have a 55gl Tank they use to be in But because of a protozoan parasite in the tank that we couldn't get rid of we were able to save the fish & are now doing a complete renovation on the main tank.
