WELCOME TO FISHLORE

Here's a few questions:

1. What are the genders of your fish? If they're both males, they'd probably be exhibiting terretoriality because ones been in the tank longer than the other.
2. How big is your tank? If it's small (less than 10 gallons), they may feel cramped or stressed.
3. What are the other inhabitants?

If you've got a male Platty and a female Swordtail, then you've got a love-match in the making.. male Platties are attracted to female Swordtails whenever there are no females of their own species to keep them occupied.. and yes, Platties and Swordtails do breed producing a hybrid offspring that look pretty cool, but tend to be sterile.

I disagree. Most pet store swordtails and platies already have mixed parentage of X. helleri, X. maculatus and X. Variatus (In other words, they are already hybrids.) and yet they are fertile.
