Swordtail question

If a friend wanted one male swordtail, would that be okay in a tank with some smaller fish? Or should you keep it with a female? Thanks,

Cory

They dont need to be kept with a female. What kind are the smaller fish?

Should be ok but watch the swordtail for aggression and provide lots of hiding spots. Some fish of the same type are just more agressive than others, so hopefully he gets a friendly one

personally... if i wanted a male swordtail, i would NOT keep it with a female. unplanned pregnancies can be stressful, lol.

Okay, thanks. Lots of hiding places right now, and think the male alone would be enough.

Hi!

I'm slightly concerned for you 'smaller fish'. They are schooling fish - and need groups. Can you get 3 more of each kind, and no other fish? Provide for the fish you have before you cater for the ones you might get.

Swords are sometimes better off alone. If u have a female in there he may harrass her and two males will fight.

Hi!

If your other fish are grouped - your tank will be overstocked with a Swordtail. Please take this into consideration.

Well if you keep the tank clean, you don't have to worry much about overstocking.

So as long as I change my water at least once a week it'd be okay?

I disagree.

While one sword will not overstock your tank Konaboy, do not get the impression that you can compensate for added extra fish by keeping the tank cleaner.

Fish ALWAYS do better when not stocked to the limit.
