New Swordtails in the family

Well with the tank cycled I decided to go with a few orange swordtails. I've got one male with two pregnant females, and they're with the two red platy's that helped cycle the tank.

I did have a guppy in the tank, but he turned out to be a pain in the butt to the females, so we simply took him to the store where we bought the swords and they gladly took him in.

I think I may put a little salt in the tank, a lot of different sites regarding swordtails recommend it. The rear of the tank has plants that cover about half the height of the tank, and covers half of the bottom, should I consider getting more? Any other recommendations?

Re: New Swordtails in the family

Swordtails are not brackish fish they are hardwater fish. In my opinion the sites were incorrect. Maybe limestone to harden the water, or other stonework. The plants are decent sounding, though.

Best of luck with the swords, they are awesome fish. Dino and I have 4 different species and enjoy them all.

Re: New Swordtails in the family

My one female gave birth today while we were working. There are probably around 6 or 7 fry that have been swimming around the tank, hiding in the plants and in the crevices in the gravel. We both have enjoyed this very much, even though it's only been a couple hours since we noticed. I am going to either get a breeder box or set up my old 5 gallon (somewhere ) for the other female who will likely drop hers soon.

The one female that was nipped by the guppy seems to have developed a little fin rot in her left pectoral. Would it be okay to medicate with Maracyn, with fry in the tank? I don't want it to get any worse, so I think it would be good to take care of this before it gets worse.
