Sump - a saltwater aquarium sump is mainly used to hide equipment under the tank and a place to perform maintenance and dosing tasks without disturbing the display tank. It is great place to hide the biopellet reactor, protein skimmer, phosphate reactor, etc. The sump also increases the total water volume in the system.

sump problem, please help!

I have a 55 gallon with a side overflow and an all glass model 1 sump. This morning I noticed 4 fry in the first chamber of the sump, which sucks because there is no way to retrieve them unless they die and the water pushes them out or swim out onto the filter floss.

I put pantyhose over the intake tube in the tank which worked fine for about two hours but now it's not flowing properly and my water level has risen significantly in the tank and has dropped about 3 inches in the sump. I just went back in the nick of time as the tank was starting to overflow onto the floor (that could have been bad lol) So obviously the panty hose is restricting the flow too much.

The only other idea I have is to take some fiberglass window screen and wrap the intake with it.

I was just wondering if anyone else had any other ideas or suggestions. Any and all are welcome and appreciated.

Hello. Glad you didn't have a major over flow there You can take any type of filter sponge and cut it to make it fit. Filter floss would work good. Just wrap it around the intake. Fasten it with a plastic clamp or rubber band.

Although it worked, still keep an eye on any material over the overflow which will clog up with time. rather than fine materials, try coarse foam which will give more time before cleaning (foam made for overflow box but still needs rinsing and monitoring water level)
