Sump - a saltwater aquarium sump is mainly used to hide equipment under the tank and a place to perform maintenance and dosing tasks without disturbing the display tank. It is great place to hide the biopellet reactor, protein skimmer, phosphate reactor, etc. The sump also increases the total water volume in the system.

I'm making mine out of a 20gallon long tank. Pros: cheaper, you decide the size of the chambers. Con: have to DIY.

I traded some other stuff I had sitting around for my 20Long tank, so that's cheap. I will probably spend $30 getting acrylic cut, and maybe another $20 on glue (BTW, does anyone know what bonds acrylic to glass?) and that's it. I can decide where I want my inlet, how big each chamber should be, how high the baffles will be, etc.

Are overflows better than drilling a hole in the tank??

Yes. If your tank didn't come with pre-drilled holes, the overflow will be better. It won't compromise the glass, you don't risk breaking it, and the one I'm looking at that flows 800gph only costs $40 on DFS. It's "Eshopps" (sp?), and they have a smaller one, as well as larger ones.
