Diatom

Any good advice on controlling the brown algae? I'm getting it on my substrate, I just turned the sand 2 days ago and it's back. I don't want to vacuum it.

i bought a sponge and just wiped it off whenever it came up. It usually comes and goes in my tank, even though its been up for almost a year, i still get it sometimes. What i do sometimes ( not always) is i just add my CAE into the tank and remove the other fish. He cleans it within 5 mins lol
but i would just scrubb it
it helped my tank
hope i helped

Hi reefdude, it's been my experience that diatoms are common in newly-established SW tanks, and will go away on their own once the tank matures.

I think Diatoms are to be expected in both Fresh and Salt tanks. Harpua is correct. The diatoms will eventually go away on their own. It may take a while but it will happen. Until then, vacuums, rinsing ornament off in siphoned tank water is the best we can do.

It could be since new but if persist, look into silicate level in the tank or maybe iighting also (insufficient light or wrong bulbs)
