Rinsing your live sand

Hey everyone...

Things are coming along well in my new SW tank, however the sand is making my tank foggy. The LFS told me to rinse it, so I did. I then added all the sand into the tank. The sand is that agronite and the store strongly recommended it.
Anyway, it was foggy when I added it and settled in a couple of days and the tank was clear. However whenever I turn the powerheads on or move the sand around for aquascaping, more sand gets kicked up and it gets foggy. I would assume when I have to vacuum it more sand will get stirred up.

Did I do anything wrong? (There is no live rock or fish in the tank yet). Did I not rinse the sand enough? I really appreciate your help.

When vacuuming hold the end of the vac about 1 inch above the sand. You don't have to dig around in the substrate like you do a FW tank.

Depending on how well you rinsed the sand (it can take many rinses) it can stay cloudy for quite some time. I usually vac the very uppermost layer of sand to remove detritus or any algae growths.

I have aragonite in my tank as well. I rinsed it like a billion times, and it was still cloudy, but it cleared up after a few days.

If you have an old HOB filter, stick that on for a few hours. I know it can mess up the motor, that's why I said "OLD". The little $8 HOB filter for a 10 gallon from Wal-Mart can clean the water in my 75 overnight...

Thanks for the help ! I just did hook up a old HOB filter. Good thing the salinity levels are a little high cause I need to add freshwater anyway so I'll vacuum. Again thanks a lot!
