Apple snail lays eggs after death of both males

I started a new job recently, and went to the opposite coast for a week, up in beautiful green and rainy Washington state. My wife tended the tanks while I was away.

Just before I left, I had to remove the sponge that was on the filter intake of my 55g tropical because it was so clogged that the filter wasn't working (I had just done a water change etc. the day before). I didn't have a spare, but I figured everything in the tank would be fine with the stock AquaClear grated 110 filter inlet.

Well, I was wrong. My wife found both large male apple snails (my blue and my gold) with all their bits sucked up into the tube one morning. The snails didn't live as they were pretty beat up. That filter should come with an intake sponge by default.

Prior to that, both of those male snails had been mating like crazy for a few weeks with what I then realized was the one female in the tank. Seriously, it was like 24/7 love fest in the tank. It got to a point it was grossing my wife out and my 3 year old started asking questions

Anyway, there were never any eggs...until a day or two after the two males died. Now, there are three pink egg clutches up in the rim of the tank.

Is that typical? Would the death of the males trigger her to lay eggs? Or did she just finally have a couple minutes to escape and do her thing?

Water quality and temperature have been consistent in the tank. Weekly water changes and all that.

Pete

well, being able to get away from all the "love" is very possible... but also it takes a lil bit for the eggs to become fertile, and grown enough for her to lay the eggs.

Wait for your snails to hatch and either use them as fishfood or give them to friends or LFS. When your snails hatch you might want to toss a few of the babies into your HOB filter as they do an awesome job of keeping the filters clean.

I did let one of the egg piles hatch. Out of it I have gold, brown/black, blue and purple snails. What a combination

The mother is *still* laying eggs. I'm amazing at how many eggs she gets out of the couplings that happened months ago.
