my new apple snail called..... erm.. apple + general lettuce question

hey i just got an apple snail to go with my 4 zebra danios and i love it. its awesome and i was suprised how fast it is.

last night i tied some lettuce around a stone n droped it in. its had a bit of a munch on it but my question is how long should i leave the lettuce in tank because i dont want to contaminate the water

Hello Feehan and congrats on the new apple snail! I'm new to snails as well. Snails are more active at night. I give my zucchini, a few times a week right after the lights go out and then I remove it in the morning. I wouldn't leave it in there more than 8 hours or so. Zucchini has calcium which is great for the snail shell. I also added 1 whole egg shell to my tank for calcium as well.
Have fun and enjoy your new snail! I posted a link at the bottom that you may find helpful.

hi ken thanks for the advice. i am so glad i got a snail its really intereasting.

i had a bit of a panic yday we thought apple had got out because i couldnt see it anywhere in the tank of lid and then it dawned on me the hole (which is now covered up) where the leads come out ofthe tank is big enough for apple to fit through. so half hour later and my room being pulled apart it comes out of its hiding place which was the roof of a little cave thing i have lol.

in the process tho when i lifted the lid of the tank even for a couple of seconds on of my danios (zebe) managed to jump through the gaap and fall down the side of my cabinet n the wall i dont know she survived once we got her out but she is fine now. amazing!

I usually give cucumber also, just wash really good, spear it to a fork or spoon. I leave it for a day or two tops and I have not had any problems with my water. My other fish love the veggies as much as the snail does.

Thats my snail in my avitar. Good Luck
