does food with copper harm snails

I fed my ghost shrimp sinking shrimp pellets that had cooper in them and after turning white I stopped giving them but they died off slowly. My gold mystery snail loved those pellets. Can I continue to give them to it since I no longer have any ghost shrimp left??

Copper kills inverts, including snails.

Hello Red. If you'll go to the top of this screen and do a search for "snails and copper" there are a few threads there that might be of interest. Although copper can be deadly to inverts some traces of copper are necessary (from what I've read). I don't know that the amount of copper in the food would be enough to be harmful or not. Until we find out differently it's best to be safe than sorry. If you have been using the food with some copper in it for a while and you aren't seeing any harm....

Snails love cucumbers and zucchini. Zucchini has calcium which is great for snails as well. They also like algae wafers/ tablets.
I feed my snails sinking shrimp pellets also. I don't have the canister the pellets came in so I can't say what the ingredients are. I like to put my food in plastic zip lock bags. Too, I've requested a response from SWilkins as she raises Mystery Snails
Have a great weekend!
Ken
I'm going to do as you have done and stop using the shrimp pellets and just use the veggies and algae wafers until we can get more responses.
Ken

Hi Ken, I usually give my snail cucumber or zucchini and he loves it but I only give it maybe twice a week. I notice it sometimes tries to get to the sinking tablets that I give the cories but gets outdone. When I used to give the shrimp pellets he would get one to his self and sit on it. Once I noticed the ghost shrimp turning white I stopped giving those. Maybe I can find some algae wafers for the snail.

Thanks much

Hikari wafers are a good choice, they are sold at Wal-mart. Wardley algae wafers contain copper sulfate

Hey sorry I have not been in here sooner. I am so sorry you lost your shrimp. I have shrimp too along with my snails and fish and I hate to lose any of them. From what I understand once copper has been in a tank it is really not safe for inverts so I would do a really good water change or move the snails. I use homemade snail foods a lot. I also use Kens catfish pellets and the snails and shrimp love them. I just read the package on that, one more time to make sure, and I don't see copper listed. All of mine do fine on this diet along with their fresh veggies. I try not to buy any foods with copper since I have snails in a lot of my tanks. I just figured better safe than sorry. EEEKKKK I hope I don't have anybody that has a copper deficiency...gotta go do some reading to make sure now. Good luck with your babies I wish I could be of more help.

Thanks SWilkins! I appreciate it! I switched over to Tetramin Tablets (The Rich Mix) and there is no copper listed on the package.
Have a good day today!

Ken I use the tetramin tablets but the other fish dont let the snail get a look in. My guppies, platies and cories love them. Maybe I could put more than one in at a time.
