Snail ID needed

I went to the pet shop today to get some stuff for my tank and some Glowlights. As the guy was helping me to get the glowlights, I noticed some snails in the tank. I might be able to get them for free the next time I get some more glowlights. But I have no idea what snails are they furthermore I'm no snail expert and have never kept snails before!

So need some snail ID help please.

Woohoo! lol. I think I figured it out. I'm gonna say it's a "shining ramshorn snail." http://www.arkive.org/shining-rams-h...tida/info.html Very pretty!

Edit: Hmmm, actually, the more I read about them, the more it sounds like they're threatened, so it seems weird that they would be for sale in a pet store. I'll keep searching.

I still think it's type of ramshorn snail, I'm just not sure which type. Maybe more people can help....

Edit #2: It's hard to tell from the picture, but if it is a red ramshorn, then you may not want to buy it. According to this site http://www.fish-tank-guide.com/ramshornsnail.html, they "are known to carry various parasitic Flukes that can be transmitted to other fish as well as to humans." Other types of ramshorn snails don't seem to carry the parasite, though.

Good luck with whatever that is! lol

Hmm... Thanks so much! They're not actually for sale, they're actually free! The pet shop has loads of them in each tank. So I might ask for some to keep in my 55 gallon. I appreciate it iloveengl!

No problem! Keep in mind, though, I may be COMPLETELY wrong.

Looks like a ramshorn to me. You might want to do a bit of reading on them before getting them. If you are not careful they will overtake your tanks trust me I know this from personal experience and I am still fighting them now.

I heard some ramshorns don't harm or disturb plants or fishes. They just eat the left over foods so that's what I'm hoping for. It'd be nice to have some snails in my tank, make it a bit more natural Thanks for the info.
