hate to kill him if i can avoid it but i sure dont want him in my tank. can i just toss him in the garden? or do they need to be submerged in water?

I dont know whether they can live out of water (guessing not), but its never a good idea to introduce foreign species into an environment, especially because most snails can breed asexually...

That would be like dumping bait buckets in lakes, if there not from there they shouldn't be introduced, invasive species are not welcome.

This to my knowledge is an aquatic snail and would probably die unless kept in water. If you particularly like this snail you could set up a small pond outside for him.

actually i'm a renter and cant do that since my courtyard is all concrete.

i hate to squish the little fellow but since they are hermaphrodites i dont see any other option. i dont know anyone with a fish pond or such to ask and i know if i leave him in the tank it will only get worse.

its too bad because he is doing one **** of a job on the algae in the tank. the glass has never been so claen.

well, chances are that (it) will not mate with its self. But since you dont want to take the chance of a snail infection, you should give hime to a local pet store, if it means that much to you. Tell them to feed it to there puffer fish.
