Do you have to have sand to have MTS's? Will they still do clean-up duty in gravel?

I have them in a 20 gal. long with gravel. I don't know how many I have in there because I have 4 yo yo loaches in that tank and hardly ever see any snails, but from time to time I will see one on the glass. They prefer sand and will do a great job keeping it sifted. I doubt they aerate the gravel, but my loaches love hunting them!
