Why can't I keep snails alive?

This is one thing I can't keep alive in my tank. Ghost shrimp thrive and get to mutant large size, fish and plants do well. But I've killed many pond snails, and now, my second batch of MTS. I'm guessing it's not copper, as that would ipe out the ghosties as well, what else could be keeping me from having healthy snails?

they dont do well in softer water. That might be the deal, I know ghosties do ok in it and so do fish and plants but snails dont like the soft water.

Duh! I never though about that. Will have to do a GH test tonight when I get home from work. Is it GH or kH that would be more important to them? The last time I tested either (it's been a while) my readings were kH 35.8 and GH 107.4

The only tank that my snails didn't survive in was my tank w/ guppies that I treated for ich w/ salt... the salt and pond snails... well u get the picture.... they all died... but my guppies ich was cured and has never came back a natural way (we did the chemical way in another tank and it didn't do so well w/ the fish so I did the salt and high temps w/ this tank)...

Well, I haven't had salt in the tank for ages, probably 40 or so water changes I doubt there's any residual sodium chloride hiding in there, but it would explain past problems. I'm going to guess a part of my problem is soft water with a high (7.8) pH.

I saw this post yesterday and wanted to hear ideas about it also. Pond snails and MTS seem to thrive in my tank, but my lovely Magenta apple snails aren't doing well at all.....4 of the 6 have died, and the other two look "peaked" they don't extend themselves like they did, and bairly move around any more...

I have cherry shrimp, MTS snails, and fish in the same aquarium, ph 7.8 and no medications or salt....

One time I thought I saw a little "bug" in the gravel....I would say it looked kind of like a 'chigger', though it has been years since I saw one of those, or maybe a small tick....Is there a parasite that bothers snails and not fish?
