It's said they reproduce in salt or brackish water only, but don't know if anyone is really sure.

They are beautiful, and are awesome algae eaters. My two zebras both died within weeks. I have no idea why, but will try them again sometime.

They're a great addition to a tank.

Babies in the salt only is my understanding also. I've been considering some myself for both salt and fresh but the new Otos seem to be on top of the fresh.

You know, these guys are supposed to be as common as dirt in my area, and I can't for the life of me find any. I've looked at estuaries, in the bay, in the delta, the only places I haven't looked is streams and rivers...the only thing I can figure is that they are hibernating, but none of the other snails in my area are...its still 70ºf pretty often here.

Anyhow, yes, they will lay eggs in freshwater, but nothing will come of them; they can also survive in freshwater for 10+ years. They will readily reproduce in brackish or saltwater as far as I know, however.

Nerite Snails

Hello,

I have had Nerite snails in my tanks for years. They are very good at eating the algae and keeping the glass looking great. I also feed them a small amount of cucumber, spinach, and algae waffers about twice a month or so. I use freshwater salt in my tanks and have never had the snails reproduce, I don't even recall ever seeing any snail eggs. I was told by the company I purchased them from that they will reproduce in a regular saltwater tank, But I only have freshwater tanks so I have no first hand knowledge of that.

My new 125 gallon tank:

2 Dwarf Gourami
7 Cardinal Tetra
7 Von Rio Flame Tetra
7 Lemon Tetra
7 Royal Black Emperor Tetra
3 Roseline Sharks
3 Cory Cats (1 Panda,1 Peppered,1 Emerald Green)
