new to me

so i got a a new plant from lfs the other day and looking around my tank i saw a darker colored snail roaming my rocks. apparently he was a hitchhiker. Im wondering if i should be worried about an infestation of them? it was in a 50 gallon tank that is being treated for ich and has a temp of 86. please help i just finished cycling about a month ago and really dont want to have to deal with a snail problem on top of an ich problem. any help helps

Maybe.................You should remove the snail from your tank since you don't know what it is. I had some snails once but I haven't been doing research before and the snails ate my plants, played with the gravel, and some reproduced too many so quickly. What pests! You can put it to other minor tanks or a small fish bowl while you're finding out what it is. Anyways, good luck with your tank!

yea, i'd just keep an eye out for them and consider a plan should they become a problem. i found 2 on some plants we got and nothing else came of it so you may not see any more.

First determine what kind of a snail it is, based on this article: http://plantgeek.net/article_viewer.php?id=14. If it's not a ramshorn snail, you shouldn't be worried. I was afraid of snails too, but after they hitched a ride to my tank (on plants, of course), they turned out to be EXCELLENT algae eaters! (That is, the pond snails.) I now keep them in all of my tanks. I now LOVE snails

If you don't overfeed your fish, and keep your tank (especially gravel) very clean, you shouldn't have any problems with the snail population. I don't overfeed my fish, and my snail population seems to stay very small.
