I know that some snails like having substrate to hide in and live in. Is it a good idea to have snails in a barebottom tank? Are there any snails that would not mind it? Is it better not to have them since I will be going barebottom? They will be housed with bettas. Will the bettas harm them?

Most snails don't care. The Malaysian Trumpet Snails are the only one of the 'COMMONLY KEPT snails that need a substrate.

The bettas shouldn't bother them. We have a crazy betta that flares at pond snails in our 55g, but he is called crazy betta for a reason. (There is no way he could get to them and actually do them harm, they'd just close up, laugh about it, and go on.) (Yes, in my mind snails can laugh. )
