HEEELLPPP!!!! Snail Farm

I was picking out and killing the pond snails when I would find them...Now my husband wants to have a Snail Fram. I got a 1gal glass "goldfish bowl" put some gravel, live plants, declorated water air stone and 6 pond snails.

What do I feed them?

How often do I need to change the water?

How much Water should I change out at a time?

I would feed them any of the various types of sinking pellets or fresh veggies ( Zuc's or lettus).

Do 50% water changes a week.

It will not be just 6 for long.

Feed them ill-will and hatred. Whatever you do, if you actually want them in a tank, they won't grow. Snails feed on negative feelings directed at them, and will grow exponentially if you don't want them around...

At least, that's what it seems like.

Honestly, green stuff, clean the tank weekly, you'll be good.

No ill will in my tanks, I personally love having them. They keep my glass clean, my soil mixed up and leave my plants alone. If I didn't get them as a gift in my plants, I would have gladly paid for some

I feed mine nothing, they consume all the unwanted garbage in my tanks, and keep everything balanced.

Hi Fishgirl. You've living exactly what we are living. My husband also wanted snails for his puffer tank so we had to take them from the shop. He's given up on his project, though. He found it disgusting (he never changed the water). So he took what snails we had in the farm and put them all in the puffer tank not to be heard of since.

So true. I got extra last time to feed the little disposal and they were all gone within the hour (and we were left with a very fat little puff). I thought that getting extra meant they would grow and multiply.

As for ill will - we have a large snail in the betta tank that everyone hates (we think he ate a frog I was trying to heal) and he is thriving.

Miserable sots.

Wow, Susan, really? I think that's probably far too much positive energy for the snails. Dont know if they can survive in these conditions. Sirdarksol is right, you need to hate them for them to thrive.

OK, seriously, though. What you'll need is loads of algae, so place your farm in direct sunlight if you can (but not somewhere your snails will cook in the baking heat, of course). Leave them a piece of lettuce and refresh it when it starts looking dodgy. Don't forget to REALLY thoroughly clean your lettuce or the snails might suffer from the pesticides on them. Also, you'd need to change 50% of your water like once a week or so. Oh, and they appreciate a calcium-based substrate, so if you could get your hand on some empty snail shells, they'll love you for it.

Yep, snails are there to frurstrate us, Amorinthe. I am convinced. You want them, they're gone. You don't want them, they multiply.
