There is no downside that I've seen from our hundreds of them. I setup a 2.5g with sand substrait and nothing but malaysian trumpet snails a month or so ago and they've gone from probably about 25 to start with to probably 50 of them. They stir up the substrait which keeps the chance of dangerous gas pockets in it much much lower. They look cool, and if you get more than you want just feed the rest to loaches. Ours have never eatten on our plants, just algae and probably pick up microscopic pieces of leftovers out of the substrait
