It is pretty cool Jess. Its so the fry have something to go to in the tank. The darkness attracts the fry in a lighter tank so that they know where the parents are and can attach to their slime coat easy.

Both care for the young, the male is just of a strain that shows changes in color. A lot of domestic strains these days are bred to show their color all the time, even during periods of stress or breeding.

In a way that's too bad. When the color is off on my fish I know something is up for sure.

I agree. However, thankfully there are other behaviors, at least with discus that can be signs.

For the most part it seems to be just the red strains that have this constant color.
