The end of an experiment, and then some
Day 26 ammonia still really, really almost zero
nitrite 0
nitrate Almost zero
Day 28
All three remain the same
Day 30
Ditto
So, the official experiment has ended, and things are looking pretty good.
My take on the system
It does most of what it says it does. I cannot argue the fact that, in the absence of plants, a 29g aquarium with a single, moderate-sized butterfly koi has nearly no nitrates. The BioMagic obviously did not instantly cycle the aquarium in the way Tetra Safestart would have, but, if the carbon/lime/resin pillows are changed out on schedule, this doesn't seem to be a problem.
Due to a need to change water out partway through the experiment, I was unable to reliably test the impact on
pH, and due to a lack of funds, I was unable to test the impact on water hardness. However, if water is not taken out, minerals are not taken out. when you add tap water, you're adding minerals. I have to presume that doing so will slowly raise the mineral content in the tank, which isn't good for the fish.
The water in the aquarium is unbelievably clear, and the algae on the walls of the tank is slowly going away.
The system is a pretty big expense, but it definitely has merits. I have been surprised by this test and am overall happy with what it has done.
