Purple Moscow Breeding Log

This was going to be a later thread, but since I've already got eight guppies; four adults (3f/1m) and four juveniles, I figured I might as well start it now.

The adults are going to be in my large community tank, though pregnant females will be moved so that the fry can be birthed in a safer place.

I have a 10g tank that's being set up specifically for the juveniles. I may have to set up another tank, depending on how things go from here.

This thread is going to be locked, as it is meant to be a simple chronicling of what is happening.

Day 1

The fry are doing well. I am feeding them Hikari First Bites. They were eating hours after I got them.

The adults are a little more skittish. They don't have enough cover at the surface of the tank. I need to remedy that today. One female appears to be pregnant. Hopefully the stress of the move doesn't affect that too much.

Day 2

The fry still are doing well. I have yet to find a permanent place for their tank, but they've got a driftwood tunnel that they dart in and out of.

The adults are doing better. The male has a favorite hiding place under the heater, but the females all are swimming out in the main tank with the rest of the fish. I'm hoping that all of the small fish swimming around together will draw the male out of hiding.

Day 29

The fry have progressed to eating small crisps (crumbled a bit) and are now in the community tank with their parents.
The largest of the fry has been following one of the glassfish around, the others are switching between hiding and checking out their new home.

Day 42
I hadn't seen the smallest fry for quite awhile, and was worried they hadn't survived the change. Today at feeding time, however, two of the smallest came shooting up out of the crypts at the bottom of the tank, each to claim a food crisp.

Day 66 (or so)

After many problems with the fry tank, it is up, running, and cycled. I believe I have three surviving fry, probably due largely to the attentions of my gold barb. However, I have two pregnant females in the fry tank. They should be dropping any day now.

Day 95

I have three juveniles in the community, and one of the youth I got originally is now in the fry tank.
I have not seen any fry in the fry tank, but I'm wondering if they're hiding.

Still no fry in the fry tank, which makes me sad, but the potential mommas don't appear any less pregnant. With zero ammonia, zero nitrites, and less than twenty nitrates, I don't think they're withholding their fry until the water gets better, but I'm just not sure.

Still no fry, but after adding an older heater that I didn't know I had and a set of xenon lights over the tank, the temp has come up to a more acceptable level. Hopefully the girls will like the water better and start to drop.
I've also added a bit of Christmas moss and a dwarf "onion" plant.
