Breeding

Has anyone ever breed silver dollars. I have 4 and not sure about the sex. One definitely has a much redder anal fin than the other 3. Today I noticed 2 (not sure which 2, I was across the room) on the floor of the tank doing something that looked like fish whoopie to me! I've had these guys since Jan. of this year and its the first time I've noticed anything like this happening. Any advice?

I too have had my Silver Dollars since around Jan, of this year. I have two females and one male. The male is much bigger than the females. Roughly about the size of my palm. I noticed several days ago that my females had black spots (which I found out means they are ready to breed). Today both females were mating with the male. Due to the fact that they are in a community tank with other fish I got the breeder net and the fish net and started scooping. I transferred roughly 100 eggs! =) And read that they will hatch in roughly three days. While mating they would swim along side each other then the female will curve her bottom fin along the underside of the male while they both shimmer and the eggs would fall to the bottom of the tank. Also, my male has a very red anal fin whereas the females fin is pinkish and almost see through. I hope this has helped you! Happy Breeding! ~Rebecca

OK, well, I thought the males were the ones with the black spots. In that case, I think I've got 3 females and 1 male. Mine were doing as you described but I didnt find any eggs. Maybe my new moon lights will get them in the mood, heehee. You just scooped the eggs with a regular net? Please post back when they hatch and let me know how it goes! I've got a female black molly in a breeder net now; she looks like she's about to pop!
