Warning: shrimp will eat fry

I was feeding my platy any guppy fry when I saw a red cherry shrimp with a little platy fry in it's pinchers. I stuck my finger in the water next to the shrimp and it let go of the fry. I had put the shrimp in there because they were small when I got them. I had a bunch of small guppy fry in there but they seemed to be disapearing, guess I know what happened to them...

I was THAT close to recommending shrimp in a fry tank to distant relative of mine, you saved us the hassle, thanks!

I agree with Shawnie. Shrimp, crabs, crawdads will eat anything they can find to munch on.

Good morning. I'm not sure if they will eat snails or not Dranger. Let's see what some other members have to say.

i know mine have tried, but the snails tend to close up before the shrimp can do any damage.

Best thing to eat snails are yoyo loaches. I suspect that, between their rapid growth rate and their tough shells, small, freshwater shrimp wouldn't be able to eat pondsnails.

they won't eat snails but they will eat snail eggs i think because i used to have a ton of snail egg blobs but i added shrimp and they started eating them, atleast i think they will

Interesting... that would explain why my single pond snail, fondly named Captain Gerrard, has not had any offspring yet that I can see...

Wow I am shocked to read that your RCS was eating your fry! I had kept fry in my RCS shrimp tank until they grew too big to where they were a threat to the SHRIMP, i never expected the shrimp to be the threat to them, although i couldnt of cared less if that were the case, as they were feeder guppy fry and i have plenty of them, i only put them in there for tank maintenance really. help with uneaten food and whatnot. However I will also add that the shrimp never ate any of my fry.

On a note i do have some experience in, YES the shrimp WILL eat the snails. I havent seen them eat snails that were alive and moving, but have witnessed the shrimps picking the unborn shrimp out from the jelly blobs that were stuck on the sides of glass/plants

I've kept shrimp and platys in the same tank for the last six months or so, never had a problem with the shrimp eating the fry. I wish they would have - I have WAY too many platys in that tank.
