Invertebrate tank?

Since i have no more females, and i have moved the 9 remaining fry to a breeder box, i came up with an idea. I can make an invetebrate tank. I have no idea about invertebrates, and i want to try something new. In my LFS they sell some crabs, i think they were red crabs, and cherry shrimp. Do crabs and shrimp go together? What do they eat? Any tank requirements? How many can i keep in a 5 gallon? Any other information is much appreciated.

sadly the crabs will eat the shrimp

I suggest the following: any several types of shrimp yellow shrimp, red cherry shrimp, tiger shrimp

Minimum 5 gallon except bamboo shrimp, they would be too big for the 5 gallon tank
Feed them algae wafers and flakes
driftwood and plants! for them to lounge and hide in

I would start out with maybe 10-15 shrimp and watch them breed and mulitple! ^^ you'll also need a filter and heater

And remember that, if you plan to breed the shrimp, you'll want that to be a sponge filter, so that the young don't get sucked up. (I've read that you can also cover a regular filter with nylon?)

Remember that the crabs would have much better armor than the shrimp, and much stronger claws, so most crabs would probably make a snack of the shrimp. Also, if you're talking about the crabs I think, they may not be fully aquatic (even if, at the petstore, they're in an aquatic tank). You might need a semi terrestrial tank if you wanted to keep them alive for the long haul.

If you were more interested in maintaining the crabs than the shrimp, here are some links to start you off. I'm guessing that what you saw were red clawed crabs, so here's a sight with some basics on them:

If what you saw was the Christmas Island Red Crab, here's a Wikkipedia entry with a basic overview of this species:

This sounds like a really interesting project. It makes me want to start a new tank. Keep us all posted with your progress.
